Dr. Josewski is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at UNBC and Early Career Resaecher EPIC-AT Fellow. She obtained her a PhD in Health Sciences from Simon Fraser University. Her doctoral work brought together research interests in health equity, health policy and financing and Indigenous health services, with a particular focus on mental health and addictions and cultural safety. These interests were informed in part by her master’s research (2006-2009) and work on a series of community-based research projects (2009-2019) where she had the privilege of working with a number of urban Indigenous communities in BC as part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers, Elders, Indigenous health care providers and community members. She also brings with her the knowledge and experience gained from working as a policy analyst in the area of health equity before joining UBC as a postdoctoral fellow
Dr. Josewski’s program of research is located at the interface of health equity, health policy and financing and Indigenous health services, with a focus on mental health and addictions, trauma, violence and diabetes/obesity. Her research aims to generate new knowledge on the social and structural factors and processes, including policy and contracting-out, that contribute to health and social inequities for Indigenous people; and those that are equity-promoting and help enhance the capacity of urban Indigenous communities to design and deliver culturally safe programming and care. To this end, she has a keen interest in the development of innovative theoretical and methodological approaches and the pursuit of community-driven, collaborative, interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research that bring together Western and Indigenous perspectives. As a member of an interdisciplinary group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers, she currently works together with six urban Indigenous communities, local health care providers and Interior Health Authority on a number of community-driven research diabetes/obesity projects that use Indigenous collaborative methodologies to develop, implement and evaluate diabetes/obesity prevention and management programs for urban Indigenous people.
