Dr. Siamak Arzanpour has received his B.Sc in Mechanical Engineering from University of Tehran. Following after graduation, he practiced engineering for two years in automotive industry. He received his Masters from Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department at the University of Toronto in 2003 and his PhD. from Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo in 2006. He worked for one year as a Postdoc and instructor at University of Waterloo. He joined School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering at Simon Fraser University in 2008. Dr. Arzanpour is also a HTIF Co-Lead for the Point of Care Health Technologies team.
Dr. Arzanpour's main research interest is vibration analysis, signal processing, intelligent systems, smart materials and control. Since joining SFU he applied his expertise in a variety of subjects with practical applications. He designed and patented a reusable airbag system which is lighter and more affordable than conventional airbag systems. His team has incorporated Mobisafe Systems Inc., to explore the outcome of this research for protecting wheelchair users against falls related injuries. His research team has also designed and patented an intelligent dental drill system that can discriminate different tooth layers in real-time. The device is a dental assistive tool that provides additional feedback to dentists and helps them avoid mistakes such as cutting healthy parts of a tooth. Also, mimicking a common subjective approach in dentistry, his team designed and patented an objective Dental Implant Stability Measurement (DISM) device to help dentists prevent implant's failure. Dr. Arzanpour is the co-founder of Prefail Dental Solutions Inc., which is established to commercialize the DISM system.
In other research projects, Dr. Arzanpour is collaborating with Rocky Montain Bicycles to design controllable shock absorbers for better handling the impacts and improve riding. He is also collaborating with SOC Robotics Inc., in designing exoskeleton robotic systems to assist paralyzed people and those who have mobility disability problems. In collaboration with Pacificure Biomedical Inc., he is planning to design new generation of more efficient spacers that are used for more convenient drug delivery of pressurized metered dose inhalers in patients affected by respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (PMDIs). His team is also working on improving the efficiency and designing new generation of Slurry Pumps for Toyo Pumps Inc.
