AGE-WELL 2016 Conference Pitch Presentations: HQP Summer Institute Teams: STIM: Feeling the differenceOur team imagined and designed an innovativative solution to agressive behaviour obsevred within aging perople with dementia, that provides music and sensory therapies at the same time, in the form of a “Smart Shirt”, that we named STIM for Sensory Textile Intervention and Monitoring.
This T shirt looks like your average shirt but it’s actually a high-tech wearable that is equipped with a number of different sensors measuring physiological signals on a real-time basis, enabling caregivers to identify when a wearer has become distressed. At this point in time, the care team will be notified and the event recorded. Over time this tracking will help the caregiver better understand the root cause of this distress, be it of an environmental or personal nature.
the Smart Shirt is also equipped with areas of sensory stimulation interchangeable with heat, as well as conductive fibres for general compression and movement capability. So, at regular predetermined intervals, the shirt will initiate a proactive intervention combining sensory stimulation in harmony with the individual’s preferred music.
Finally, As the Smart Shirt is monitoring the wearer’s physiological signals, Once a wearer has become distressed, sensory feedback would initiate sensory stimulation as a first response, while a signal is sent to the caregiving team. The shirt, as the first response before a caregiver can arrive on scene helps to soothe and deescalate the wearer’s distress based on their own preferences.

University of Waterloo
Based on examples taken from our project WP8.3, this presentation will address ethical issues related to technology research and development targeting persons with cognitive disabilities. It will also answer some key questions such as: What makes an issue an ethical issue? Do emerging technologies create new ethical issues? Why do we have to consider them? When do we have to consider them? Who is to say what is wrong and what is right? How do we study them? 8.3 PRIV-SENSE | Scientific Excellence - Leadership | 2017-01-10 | Hajer Chalghoumi |

Interactive Web-based Platform of Privacy Laws, and Information and Training Resources in Canada This Drinks N’ Demos showcases one major output of this project. It consists of a web-based platform presenting a scan of Canadian privacy laws and related information and training resources relevant to technology developers. The purpose of this platform is to inform AGE-WELL members on the regulations existing in Canada to protect the privacy of all citizens. The platform was designed to be interactive and engaging to allow individuals to navigate to sections that are of interest to them CHEO Research Institute, University of Ottawa, University of Toronto, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières | KTEE - Knowledge Mobilization | 2018-10-16
Catalyst Program (2017) – Implementing changes in technology development practices that protects users’ security and privacy (AWCAT - 2017- 109)Our aim is to improve the practices of AGE-WELL members when developing technologies, so that they become international leaders in ethical development and commercialization of technologies for the elderly with cognitive
impairments. Persons with cognitive impairments constitute about a quarter of the aging population. They have trouble remembering, learning, concentrating, or making decisions affecting everyday life. They benefit from the use of information
and communication technologies (ICT) that are known as cognitive assistive technologies, because of the support they provide to independent living. However, the elderly with cognitive impairments are among the most vulnerable to privacy
breaches and their use of technology raises many ethical concerns. For example, many of these individuals
misunderstand who has access to the information being recorded by ICT. Currently, safety and monitoring of these
individuals supersede privacy considerations. Furthermore, technology developers often lack awareness of the privacy and
security regulations, and struggle with applying best practices within a sustainable business plan. We propose an
Implementation of Change process, which is a knowledge mobilization process leading to improved professional practices.
It is a 7-step process and this grant will fund the first two steps. We will conduct an analysis of AGE-WELL members’
security and privacy practices, and identify areas of improvements and targets for change. This will inform the following
steps of the process, and lead to increased awareness of privacy and security regulations and best practices when
developing ICT for persons with cognitive impairments. The team includes the AGE-WELL CC1 leads who will use the
proposed project as a pilot testing of knowledge mobilization strategies among the network members. This project and the
subsequent steps of the model will lead to improved practices among AGE-WELL members and beyond, and will therefore
contribute to make available technologies that respect the privacy and security of their users.8.3 PRIV-SENSE CHEO Research Institute, University of Ottawa, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, University of Toronto | Scientific Excellence - Leadership | 2017-07-19

AGE-WELL 2016 Conference: Medication Management: Making It Safe And EasyOur medication management application is a unique product supporting safe medication use through cognitively accessible interfaces that are easier to use than current applications. The application also emphasizes the importance of maintaining respect of users’ privacy. End-users have the ability to grant or share access with caregivers. This functionality helps persons with complex healthcare needs might require support to communicate with caregivers, while maintaining a level of independence. In addition, because information is stored electronically, the application can support communication with healthcare providers, allowing clinicians to monitor medication use more efficiently and effectively.8.3 PRIV-SENSE | KTEE - Knowledge Mobilization | 2016-10-20 | Maxine Perrin |

MouvMat: The Interactive Digital Exergaming Surface for Older AdultsMouvMat is an interactive digital gaming surface to provide physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and social engagement to older adults. Our systematic review found that existing exergames have potential to improve physical and cognitive health of older adults in nursing homes. However, since these games are not designed for their specific needs and interests, older adults are less likely to engage with these games to achieve the benefits. Uniquely, MouvMat has been co-created with older adults living in nursing homes, along with their healthcare professionals and healthcare administrators. It features illuminating interface and provides visual feedback to older adults during the game. The Players interact directly with the digital surface which display simplified games that are familiar and geared toward older adults. By providing older adults a fun and social way to increase their physical activity, MouvMat optimizes their physical and social health and their ability to age gracefully.
