Exploring Collaborative Culture Sharing Dynamics in Immigrant Families through Digital Crafting and StorytellingFamilies strengthen bonds by collectively constructing social identity through sharing stories, language, and culture. For immigrant families, language and culture barriers disrupt the mechanisms for maintaining intergenerational connection. Immigrant grandparents and grandchildren are particularly at risk of disconnect. In this paper, we investigate existing design guidelines using a tool (StoryTapestry) to explore the storytelling and crafting process of South-Asian immigrant grandparents and grandchildren. In this exploration, pairs used culturally-relevant images to create digital visual artifacts that tell their stories. Grandparent-grandchild pairs from 10 South-Asian immigrant families participated in this exploration of how the digital process fosters positive social connection, culture sharing, and co-construction. A thematic analysis revealed how collaborative digital crafting encourages the crossing of language and culture barriers, knowledge sharing, and creativity. We contribute an understanding of interaction dynamics and socio-technical implications of intergenerational and cross-cultural collaboration by demonstrating (1) that collaborative digital crafting can reverse traditional educator and learner roles to create culture sharing opportunities, (2) that grandparents play a central role in maintaining social interaction, (3) that structure can guide grandparent-grandchild pairs to a shared goal, and (4) that flexibility encourages engagement from children. We synthesize ideas from migration and collaboration research, and we discuss how the culture, language, and generational dynamics in our study extend what is known about each of these spaces. Together, our design implications offer insight into building digital tools that promote engagement, knowledge sharing, and collaboration between immigrant grandparents and grandchildren navigating social disconnect post-migration. Designing Conversational User Interfaces for Older AdultsWe are concurrently witnessing two significant shifts: voice and chat-based conversational user interfaces (CUIs) are becoming ubiquitous, and older people are becoming a very large demographic group. However, despite the recent increase in research activity within fields such as CUI, older adults continue to be underrepresented as CUI users both in research and in the design of commercial products. Therefore, the overarching aim of this workshop is to increase the momentum for research that centers on older adults as CUI users. For this, we plan to create an interdisciplinary space that brings together researchers, designers, practitioners, and users, to discuss and share challenges, principles, and strategies for designing CUIs for the ageing population. We thus welcome contributions of empirical studies, theories, design, and evaluation of CUIs for older adults. Through this, we aim to grow the community of CUI researchers across disciplinary boundaries (human-computer interaction, voice and language technologies, geronto-technologies, information studies, etc.) that are engaged in the shared goal of ensuring that older adults are not marginalized or excluded from the design of CUIs. Understanding Older Adults' Safety Perceptions and Risk Mitigation Strategies when Accessing Online ServicesOlder adults increasingly adopt the Internet for general daily activities that improve their quality of life. At the same time, media reports and public safety campaigns are raising awareness of increases in digitally mediated scams that target this demographic. Without reliable access to information and support to manage risks, cybersecurity threats (actual or perceived) may consequently affect how older adults engage with essential online services such as online banking, e-health, or shopping, as well as further increase their vulnerability. We present an in-depth qualitative investigation aimed at uncovering how older adults' perceptions of and attitudes toward online threats, online safety behaviours, and risk mitigation strategies affect their willingness to adopt essential services involving financial transactions or personal information. We reflect on the consequences that these attitudes, strategies, and safety-related practices have for the age-inclusive design of online services such as banking or shopping. What Happens After Death? Using a Design Workbook to Understand User Expectations for Preparing Their Data Digital data has become a key part of everyday life: people manage increasingly large and disparate collections of photos, documents, media, etc. But what happens after death? How can users select and prepare what data to leave behind before their eventual death? To explore how to support users, we first ran an ideation workshop to generate design ideas; then, we created a design workbook with 12 speculative concepts that explore diverging approaches and perspectives. We elicited reactions to the concepts from 20 participants (18-81, varied occupations). We found that participants anticipated different types of motivation at different life stages, wished for tools to feel personal and intimate, and preferred individual control on their post-death self-representation. They also found comprehensive data replicas creepy and saw smart assistants as potential aides for suggesting meaningful data. Based on the results, we discuss key directions for designing more personalized and respectful death-preparation tools. What’s The Talk on VUI Guidelines? A Meta-Analysis of Guidelines for Voice User Interface DesignOver the past decade, voice user interface (VUI) design has been steadily growing, along with a growing VUI presence in consumer markets. However, there is currently a lack of widely-established guidelines for VUI design. While many sets of VUI guidelines have been proposed, they tend to be developed independently of each other, leading to a lack of consensus on appropriate guidelines for VUI design. This can hinder the wider adoption of practical VUI guidelines. To address this gap, we performed a large-scale meta-analysis of 336 VUI design guidelines that have been proposed in academic literature. Using thematic analysis, we present a unified and synthesized set of 14 guidelines, representing the most universally proposed principles of VUI design as captured by the 336 VUI guidelines identified in academic literature. We hope that this synthesized set can address several of the challenges to the adoption of VUI guidelines in design practice.
